GNOME 3.0 delayed until September

GNOME 3.0 delayed until September

[Development] Posted Apr 1, 2011 13:38 UTC (Fri) by jake

The GNOME release team met at the Bangalore (India) hackfest this week and has decided to delay the release of GNOME 3.0 until September. This is the second delay as it was originally scheduled for a September 2010 release. A press release has been issued that covers some of the reasons behind the move: "The recent announcement that the Mozilla project would discontinue support for embedding has cast doubts on the technical underpinnings of the new GNOME shell. There are also concerns about the frequently shifting visual design and questions about its performance and portability. The release team is also concerned about the possible near-future release of GTK4 and what that means for GNOME as a development platform."

Also, in his announcement email (below), Vincent Untz looks at the release plans: "To keep the focus on 3.0, we are not proposing to release GNOME 2.34 next week. However, a new module proposals period will open for 3.0, and we are committed to carefully consider the forthcoming proposals, including alternate desktop shells."

[Update: As everyone but a certain coffee-deprived editor was able to discern, this is, evidently, an April Fool's joke. Sorry for the noise.]
