It really pleases me to see all the activity around PostGIS; Stonebraker designed Postgres with this kind of application in mind. Back in 1992, before that WWW thing took off, I was hacking alone, under contract, on image photo-interpretation algorithms, and was using Postgres's spatial operators (and PostQuel's extensible query language infrastructure) in the data store.
