I always wondered why no one forked CentOS? Or starts similar builds based on Scientific Linux? And just a note, under "no one" I mean group, not single person...

Also, it wasn't so long ago when CentOS had problems with main developer. And back then things looked bright and promising. What happened in the mean time? Maybe grumpy editor should investigate. I would trust him to offer independent and non-biased view in this whole mess. And also, people will respond to his mails, unlike to the mails of majority of others...

centos' inherent problems: (lack of) transparency and nih syndrome

One thing that is different between Centos and Scientific Linux is that Centos' goals are to make a 100% compatible RHEL clone. Once a build machine is able to fully build it, building the packages isn't too terribly difficult. I've been left under the impression that the technical work is more of a one time sort of effort and once it's done, there isn't much to help with. But yeah, they could do some better community management. Seems like someone should be able to help them spin up a foundation or something and at least make a platform which could be used to pay those silent gentlemen that are doing the work.
