You're seriously saying that Tom Munnecke doesn't understand relational databases? That no one on the VistA team has ever heard of database normalization?? That is so implausible that I wonder if you're delusional.

LOTS of people design databases like that. Large sections of books are dedicated to it. Start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denormalization
Munnecke just said that relational databases are a bad fit for the VistA workload. Why do you find it so hard to believe him?
