On the Open Source Initiative (OSI) blog, Simon Phipps
reports on an OSI board meeting that appointed Karl Fogel, Jim Jagielski, and Mike Godwin to the board (replacing Russ Nelson and Danese Cooper who are leaving due to term limits, and adding an additional board seat). At the meeting, there was also movement toward more open governance for OSI. "
This time the Board was able to reach agreement. OSI intends to move to a representative model, with open source communities of all kinds able to become members and participate in OSI's mission and governance directly. We decided the best approach was to offer a way for those communities to affiliate with OSI. The first step will be to change OSI's bylaws to permit entities other than the Board to participate in governance."

Calls for Presentations
The Linux Plumbers Conference
call for presentations is now open. Proposals need to be in by April 30 and the conference will be held September 7-9 in Santa Rosa, California. "
A good topic will cut across community boundaries, and should generate vigorous discussion leading to beneficial change. One excellent example from a past LPC was "From Naught to Sixty in 5 Seconds" back in 2008. This topic involved a sizable fraction of the Linux-related software stack, and required coordinated changes to many components. It set the goal of booting a netbook in five seconds, and within a few months actually achieved a three-second boot. That said, talks describing lessons learned during an already-completed implementation effort are also welcome, as long as they are likely to generate good discussion and to help others avoid similar pitfalls in future implementation efforts."
