The complaint of the time was exactly as Jon wrote:

In the distant past, there were also complaints that Red Hat will terminate its support contract for users that run their own kernel, rather than what is supplied with RHEL.

This is not what you are arguing, where if you run a custom kernel you can gain support from Red Hat for an issue by rebooting with the Red Hat-provided kernel and reporting the issue in that environment. With this older policy, the act of running the custom kernel had terminated your support and thus you had no support contract to report the bug if it was also present when running the Red Hat-provided kernel.
