I don't know which OS you use, but on Linux I can; between Slackware, SuSE, and Debian 1.3 to 6.0 (and in fact, I did, I'm still using essentially my home from 10 years ago), and also from i386 to ARM to Sparc to UltraSparc to x64.
There's some problems with *BSD and Solaris, because there you need to install a slew of ports in order for my "basic" configs of my home to work (most obviously, you need a decent shell, bash to be precise).

Ah, so you don't use any non-system-wide browser (or gimp, etc.) plugins, or you have customized all the required environment variables. Many different arch plugins are dropped into the same directory. Some systems will just skip different-arch plugins, but you have to take care to rename them *before* copying on top of existing ones.

Precisely. I share my home directory, and mostly it works fine. But the morons at Mozilla don't know how to write software properly, so my Firefox plugins break every time I log in from a different machine. Gimp is slightly better (in that it at least supports the concept of running different versions and multiple instances concurrently), but still problematic.
