Choosing between portability and innovation

Portability is a key concept in the open source ecosystem. Sometimes, though, portability has been sacrificed, either explicitly or implicitly, in the interest of innovation. New features are often added in a Linux-only way that makes it difficult for other free operating systems (notably the BSD family) to keep up.
