There is always XFCE if you want a conservative desktop with a "classic" feel. Too bad it always gets second billing in distributions. The distro-specific maintenance tools tend to be Gnome or KDE oriented, and the integration sometimes has rough edges. I have been using XFCE for around 2 years now as the default desktop on my work linux computer (after KDE), and it has worked quite well. XFCE has few frills, but does not get in the way of real work.

Seconded. It's simple, clean and enjoyable all around. It became my primary desktop a few years ago and it's the first thing I now install on Debian. Gnome (or KDE) refugees should give it a try.
