FWIW, the LiveCDs of Red Hat's next version seem to be using Gnome Shell, if you want to try it out. I had occasion to use it (debugging a lid issue) and thought it was kinda neat. I'd need more time to get a better feel for it, though.

That's Fedora, not Red Hat's next version.
