WordPress 3.1 released

The WordPress 3.1 release is out. "This release features a lightning fast redesigned linking workflow which makes it easy to link to your existing posts and pages, an admin bar so you're never more than a click away from your most-used dashboard pages, a streamlined writing interface that hides many of the seldom-used panels by default to create a simpler and less intimidating writing experience for new bloggers (visit Screen Options in the top right to get old panels back), and a refreshed blue admin scheme available for selection under your personal options." Strangely, the code name for this release is "Django". (Update: the code name has since been changed to "Reinhardt".)

The code name is "Reinhardt" after Django Reinhardt. Wordpress uses jazz musician names for their code names https://wordpress.org/about/roadmap/

Now that is interesting...the announcement has been edited since I put up the article. Somebody must have caught on that "Django" wasn't the best name to use in this context.

Evidence for the code name change can be found over here.

It appears that the reason to consider it a strange name is that there is another web framework thingy named Django, which I had never heard of before. Seems like complaining about this gives the Django people some much-needed publicity.

I had thought maybe Jon was finding it odd to name a release after a spaghetti-western character.

Django is widely known (and used) by Python web developers. The reason to change the name was probably more of a need not to step on anyone's toes or confuse people (just like it would be inadvisable to call it Wordpress Zend, or Wordpress Ubuntu).

Also, because there's a Django Foundation that holds the "Django" trademark.
