Tom's Definitive Linux Software Roundup: Audio Apps (Tom's Hardware)

Tom's Hardware has an extensive guide to Linux audio applications. The article has mini-reviews of a number of different kinds of audio applications, including music managers, audio players, CD players, CD rippers, tag editors, and so on. "Originally, we intended to create a single article on Linux-based audio applications. However, it soon became apparent that the sheer number of audio production apps would not permit this. So that we don't bore casual users with audio production jabber, this article is split in two: content consumption and content creation. Most end-users will be more interested in this article, while musicians and audio professionals should look to the next one for their Linux audio needs."

It's rather surprising they missed Ardour.

Ardour isn't about content consumption.
It would be rather suprising if they missed it in the second article.

I'm surprised they've left out MPD (Music Player Daemon) and its various clients. You can drive a USB DAC connected to your Hi Fi via a Linux server running MPD and control it via other client devices. You don't have to run Pulse Audio on the music server and can just go direct to ASIO. Keeping the server driving the DAC as simple as possible means that you can get better sound.

There are many MPD clients including Firefox plugins, Linux apps, iPad and Maemo apps etc and they communicate with the MPD server and tell it what to play.

One capability that their reviews didn't cover was submitting metadata to an online disc database (such as freedb or MusicBrainz). I've been using Grip for submitting to freedb, but it's been unmaintained since 2005 and is showing its age.

Huh, may have to look at updating my old Grip plus GOGO system, if anything new is actually faster.
