SurfControl Announces Strategy For SurfControl E-mail Filter To Support
Linux-based Computing Platforms
Will Provide Total Secure Content Solution to Meet Growing Use of Linux in
Enterprises
LINUXWORLD CONFERENCE & EXPO 2003, San Franciso, (August 5, 2003) - As part
of its mission to stop unwanted content in the enterprise, SurfControl, the
world's number one Web and e-mail filtering company, (London:SRF, Nasdaq
Europe:SRFC), today announced its strategy for SurfControl E-mail Filter to
support Linux-based computing platforms.
The strategy, announced at this year's conference, is part of SurfControl's
broad initiative to provide a total secure content solution for the growing
number of enterprises who have adopted Linux as part of their network
operations. It also furthers SurfControl's ability to market in this
important enterprise segment following its announcement of SurfControl Web
Filter support for Linux and technology support for Sun Microsystems' Sun
Fire [tm] V60x and V65x servers in March. Leading analyst firm IDC
recently recognized Linux as the fastest growing operating system and the
third-highest volume platform in the industry behind Windows and
Solaris[tm].
SurfControl E-mail Filter for Linux will allow enterprises to deploy a
combination of the industry's most powerful e-mail, anti-spam and anti-virus
content management tools with the strong Internet access management and
reporting capabilities of SurfControl Web Filter. This combination will
offer enterprises with intelligent content filtering, stronger network
security and greater filtering control options to meet changing Internet
access needs, e-mail threats and network requirements.
"We recognize the adoption of Linux-based solutions and appliances in the
enterprise marketplace has gained significant momentum," said Kevin
Blakeman, SurfControl's president of U.S. operations. "This decision is
part of our commitment to offer our customers, technology partners and
resellers the most flexible and scalable content security tools that can be
integrated into any network environment. SurfControl E-mail Filter's ease
of management, scalability and capabilities to support the messaging
infrastructures of large scale enterprises makes it the e-mail content
security tool of choice for creating high performance, low cost solutions
for secure computing," said Blakeman.
SurfControl's strategy also complements that of a number of leading
enterprise technology partners and systems integration providers who are
rapidly moving to deliver Linux-based products. Sun Microsystems, one of
SurfControl's major technology partners, is one example.
"Sun has delivered on our earlier promise to provide low cost computing
solutions, based on standard Linux, Solaris, and x86 products, that bring a
new level of security and manageability, and significantly reduced total
cost of ownership," said Richard Finlayson, Director, x86 Market
Development, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "SurfControl is an ideal partner with
whom we can work to deliver best-of-class low cost solutions. Together we
can meet our customer's need for superior secure content appliances for Web
and e-mail filtering, with the price and performance they need, and backed
by two industry leaders."
Stopping unwanted content from entering the corporate network is now an
"ebusiness necessity" for organizations using the Internet, e-mail, instant
messaging and the Web, according to IDC. SurfControl's Linux strategy is
"designed to blend our strengths with those of our technology partners and
resellers to give enterprises of all sizes the ability to deploy 'industrial
strength' security and content filtering solutions, regardless of their
network architecture," Blakeman said.
The company plans to deliver SurfControl E-mail Filter on versions of Linux
to customers in the fourth quarter, this year.
SurfControl E-mail Filter combines multiple layers of spam detection and
content filtering, including a vast spam signature database, artificial
intelligence and lexical analysis using Boolean logic to identify and
classify spam in real time. It also includes some of the industry's
strongest anti-virus protection, to scan, cleanse and block e-mail borne
viruses, by file type and in attachments. SurfControl Web Filter is a
rules-based tool that incorporates a comprehensive database of more than 5
million sites in 40 different categories, artificial intelligence, multiple
deployment options and comprehensive reporting and analysis.
