Isn't that like, so 1983? Surely 30 characters or more would be a much more reasonable limit for interface names, given all the things that can be tacked on these days.

Unfortunately, the kernel->userspace ABI for network ioctl() calls defines the interface name to be IFNAM size, or 15 characters usable. It would be impossible to change every userspace program ever produced and in use to allow for a longer device name.
