as soon as redhat (and hence fedora) gives up on rpm and its half baked apt clone - yum, this sort of discussion will be pointless.
rpm was a great idea, but debian took things to the next level by wrapping dpkg up with apt. why redhat clings to rpm+yum is beyond reasonable comprehension. most likely its rooted in redhats irrational fetish for python.

Do enlighten me, does dpkg still allow(!) the package to force interactivity during installation/update? As in, does it still have the ability to completely destroy automatic updates?

Not sure if it *can* force it, but I've been updating automatically (using DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive) for over a year now and I've never come across a situation where it *does* force it.

What concept do you think the word "default" relates to: format or configuration?
