Much as I want to cheer them on, it really would help to see a range of benchmarks from the Parrot/Perl 6 community which look mildly close to competitive with other VMs and scripting languages. To somebody who isn't too closely involved, it often seems like quantifying performance must be taboo in Parrot/Perl 6 circles, and what I have seen about performance isn't pretty.

Quantifying performance is certainly not taboo. Quite the opposite, I know for a fact that Rakudo people would love to have a good benchmark suite but noone has gotten around to doing one yet. I once tried to use the existing test suite for benchmarking and drawing daily performance graphs, but got some weird numbers and my test setup broke. Unfortunately real life does not permit me to invest any time right now.
