One Krita hacker, Dmitry Kazakov, is also a keen amateur photographer and he agrees with you. On the other hand, Martin Reynolds of MyPaint shows that there's advantage of 16 bit/channel when painting in http://mypaint.intilinux.com/?p=19.

And in the final analysis, if my camera or scanner can produce 12 (or 16) bits/channel, and my expensive monitor (wish I had one) can show 12 (or 16) bits/channel, then it would be a pity not to keep all that precision, I guess.
