I used sage (Add-On Feedreader for Firefox) at first, switched to Akregator and used that for quite a while, but became "disgruntled" with it after the switch to 4.x. After that I found tt-rss and never locked back. You need to have a webserver to use it, but I love being able to read my feeds whereever I am without the need to sync readerprofiles between all the different machines I use.

I'll second this - tt-rss is a great tool. Yes it is web based, so you need a web server. But having your rss feeds in the cloud makes them far more useful. You can check in from multiple machines and not have to worry with duplicates. There's an Android client, and a mobile optimized website built in.

I use it so I can keep my feeds in one place, keep them up to date from any of the three computers I use regularly, and can easily read them on my phone.

multiple computers is the key

The reason I use Google Reader is purely because I have so many devices I consume news on now. This kinda invalidates any reader that is tied to any given desktop. However I do run my own server so I will have a look at tt-rss as using open source web-based tools is still preferable to being tied to a proprietary service that operates on the whim of it's corporate overlord*.

* not that I'm overly worried about Google going evil and shafting my RSS reading experience.

tt-rss is great, yes. I have it also. But I find it a tad bit too slow for me, and the interface is not fast and responsive like a real webapp.

I'm using Liferea right now. I don't find that slow, maybe because I don't use Google Reader-integration. I would love tt-rss integration though, or some kind of sync to make it follow me on my machines and on my phone...
