This was admittedly on Ubuntu 9.10 but Evolution back then would not cope at all with RSS feeds that require authentication (which may not be an issue in public spheres but if you're interacting with say Microsoft Sharepoint inside your VPN, it can matter). Thunderbird 2.x and 3.x have been fine in this particular area.

The current Evolution RSS plugin does support authenticated feeds.
