Easily fixed. For instance, on Fedora, just do:

yum install hurd

Followed by (after the reboot into Hurd):

yum remove kernel linux-firmware

I believe you read the whole message wrong. It's not about firmwares. There's a more fundemental problem. They want Linus to remove of the first paragraph in the COPYING file of the linux distribution.

I must agree with them that the name "open core" is a good description of the situation here.
