Turns out that the image-based remoting works damn fast. Modern image compression techniques blow away what we had when VNC and X were still the top dogs in remoting. The problem is that image-based remoting needs to use lossless compression or your applications end up looking like crap. I'm not so sure that can be done as easily as you suggest.
