Parent article: ODF Plugfest: Making office tools interoperable

I've thought, for decades, that there should be a vendor-neutral standard format for office documents. Finally, we're seeing that dream come to pass. ODF 1.0 had a lot going for it, but it also had some important weaknesses - in particular, it lacked a specification for spreadsheet formulas. In fact, I thought this issue was so important that I joined the process to create it.

I'm delighted to see this process bearing fruit. No standard is "perfect", but I think this specification includes the functionality that most people expect in "office documents". I expect that there will be future versions ODF that refine and extend it. But ODF version 1.2 is a great milestone, and quite usable for the things that the vast majority of people do with office documents.

Thanks for all your work on this. You had a criticism, you acted to rectify it and have spend significant amounts of time in fixing the problem to see the end stage. That's a good role model to follow :-)

I'm gonna second the thanks for your hard work. Having a good formula specification is important!

"Joined the process", says the original drafter of OpenFormula and subcommittee chair. You win the self-deprecation award for this year, I think. Without you I suspect we wouldn't have had an OpenFormula spec yet, or anything like it. And it is a Good Thing.

Yes I remember your great effort in the humble beginnings of OpenFormula. I'm equally pleased to see it finally being official. Personally all I did back then was to promise KOffice support, so I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your work.
