Kernel vulnerabilities: old or new?

A quick search of the CVE database turns up 80 CVE numbers related to kernel vulnerabilities so far this year. That might be a discouraging number, but only if we feel that we are continuing to introduce vulnerabilities at that rate; if we're just fixing older stuff, perhaps the kernel is getting more secure over time.
