To capture a high-definition video stream, you don't really need an "extremely large, extremely fast storage attached". 1920×1080@30fps is only 178 Mbyte/s, and a single modern disk does over 100 Mbyte/s. Put two 2 Tbyte disks into a RAID-0 set and you should be able to capture over 6 hours worth of video data.

(I agree that it would rarely be *useful*, but it's hardly infeasible.)

My guess is that MythTV developers do not regard six hours of storage capacity as a "feasible" spec for a DVR.

Fast forward to some date in the future. Storage capacities have now become so big that they make storing uncompressed video "feasible".

But the size of compressed video is still a few percents of the uncompressed equivalent. Even in the future, who would be interested in wasting so much space?

You could have used the same argument to argue against audio (even compressed audio) as opposed to flat text. Even in 2010, who would be interested in wasting so much space?
