Problem is that "real" problems are usually messy and very hard to solve (and you have to convince "real" people that you solved them too!), while "imaginary" problems you can set up so they are solvable. The old quip on the difference between theory and practice, in another guise ;-)

Once nice thing about academic research is that analyzing problems is just as useful as solving them.
