Full GNOME census report now available

When Dave Neary announced his GNOME Census report, he stated that the full report would only be available to paid customers until October, when it would be released under the CC Attribution-Sharealike license. Things have changed, though, and the full report is now available to all. "Why the change of heart? My intention was never to make a fortune with the report, my main priority was covering my costs and time spent. And after 24 hours, I've achieved that. I have had several press requests for the full report, and requests from clients to be allowed to use the report both with press and with their clients." The report may be downloaded via this page.

Direct link, anyone? This for-pay/gratis portal teaser thing really gives me a bad taste. It's not how GNOME is done. I am surprised that LWN has linked to it.

Don't understand your complaint. The full report done by a consultant is now available for free.

Well, what is the direct URL to the document?

There is a "Download" link but it send me to an empty page. I have cookie disabled but this is no excuse. After all it is supposed to be freely redistributable, so GNOME should just host it.

At least at the time that I looked a few hours ago, there was a "Download" button, which trampolined through something that wanted my name and email address.

I don't require people to give me their details when they download my source code; I don't see the fundamental difference here for non-code contributions.

He has every right to decide how to provide it since he has spend money creating the report. A report is not source code. Would you demand all analysis on Free software be freely available as well?

Whether or not the report cost its maker money is not relevant, just as it is not relevant when I release free software. Of course a writer can do what s/he likes with what s/he makes, but not everything one makes is worthy of "the premier news and information source for the free software community."

In particular, this resource is missing a uniform locator, which was my original point :)
