Wow jef, for once we agree :)

Take a look at notify-osd, their fork of chipx86's libnotify. Granted they didn't create notify-osd until after libnotify upstream was DEAD, but a lot of Gnome-ites are upset about notify-osd and not working with upstream on a solution.
