FWIW, Fedora 14 is planning on replacing Upstart with systemd and Rawhide now has made the switch already

Other distributions like openSUSE seem to be switching in their next release as well. For all Canonical led projects, there is the thorny problem of copyright assignment as covered at

If they stop doing that, perhaps we would see a more diverse base of contributions and more deployments of things like Launchpad.
