How about a periodic (say once every 10 years) divorce from your mistakes? Maintaining backwards compatibility forever seems like a terrible waste of resources for an open source project.

That period would vary depending on the particular situation. Some will have to live with their mistakes forever. Some can cut it short and have a clean break in a few years.
Living with your mistakes indefinitely?
