Requiring a copyright assignment just means that people who don't like the Apple Store probably won't contribute in the first place. Instead of removing and re-writing the code, you would have to write it yourself in the first place. Not only that, but people who don't like paper-work won't contribute code. It doesn't make sense to take a hit now for something you may never need down the line.
