Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Hits Beta 2, Targeting Year End Release (Datamation)

Datamation covers the release of RHEL 6 Beta 2 and suggests that the final RHEL 6 release will happen before the end of the year. "In addition to the enhancements to the kernel and installer, Red Hat is also restructuring the beta for some specific use-cases. There is now a RHEL 6 Server release as well as a RHEL 6 Workstation release. Additionally, for the server release, there are now Clustered Storage, Large File System, High Availability and Load Balance versions."

It amazed me what's considered "Beta" at Red Hat. At first beta I was nearly sure noone at Red Hat had seriously booted and run the thing (syntax errors in startup scripts and such).

The second beta might be better, but I did not have a chance to try it out yet, since it does not boot on my hardware at all (panicks upon mode setting on i865, but it's rather older hardware and possibly not officially supported).

From what I've heard Red Hat had a number of internal beta releases prior to the public beta 1 release.

Bugs and known issues are expected with beta releases... after all they are not release candidates.

I'm running beta 1 on a desktop. I've not seen any problems like that. The only two problems I've had are figuring out epel and nvidia drivers. Otherwise it has been a lot like my F13 laptop. In fact, whenever I'm missing a package, I grab the F13 source and rebuild.

Take a look at EPEL. There is a EL6 beta branch with lots of packages sourced from Fedora.

Beta 2 was pretty terrible for me, but it turned out to be all down to a single issue: There was a bug in KSM which caused memory in the RHEL 6 beta 2 virtual machine to get corrupted randomly, causing userspace processes to crash (rarely, but enough to destabilise things).

So that's not great, but this bug was introduced accidentally at the last minute, and bugs do happen to the best of us.

Rich.

I really wouldn't like to cope with a new RHEL release around christmas because that would mean to move holidays and a sad family. RHEL 6 is so late already that a few weeks won't matter at all. :-)

Couldn't you just ignore the new release till you are ready for it regardless of the time of the release?
