There is a secret much faster fork of GNU cat, called GNU mouse. Unfortunately FSF is not accepting patches because it is written by a collaborative team of dogs, cats and mice.

...and in GNU cat development, on June 18, Eric Blake of Redhat committed a barely perceptible and widely ignored change to improve its documentation. No gibbons, parrots or wombats were harmed by, or in any way involved with, the event.
