Cornelius and Vincent Join Different Games (KDE.News)

KDE.News has a joint interview with KDE e.V. President Cornelius Schumacher and GNOME Foundation President Vincent Untz. In it, they discuss Schumacher recently becoming a "Friend of GNOME" and Untz's reciprocal move to become a "KDE Supporting Member". "I don't remember who exactly brought it up, but somebody said that it would be cool to have somebody from GNOME join us. We are working together increasingly well after all and there are lots of good relationships between the two communities. GNOME and KDE share so much in terms of goals, philosophy, and technology, that it makes a lot of sense to stay together, and address the challenges for free software on the client. [...] So after a carefully crafted scientific selection process to find the coolest guy in GNOME, we came up with the idea to ask Vincent to join the game, and the other way around for me to become a friend of GNOME."

Linux at HP: A Decade of Leadership (OS News)

OS News covers a talk by Bdale Garbee, HP Open Source & Linux Chief Technologist. "According to Garbee, HP has a somewhat unique approach to open source. HP participates not just by funding projects but truly getting their hands dirty as a direct open source member, collaboratively supporting existing community values and behaviors and developing even more robust enterprise capabilities. HP is especially unique in the open source field in that they have only ever used existing licences: HP has never created its own license. In addition, HP was an early contender in fighting license proliferation, or when pieces of software cannot be combined because their licences are incompatible. Finally, HP combines its efforts with Linux distributions in order to bring the most effective solutions for its customers."

Russell: Superfreakonomics; Superplug for Intellectual Ventures

Rusty Russell looks at the last chapter of Superfreakonomics on his blog. That chapter is a glowing overview of the "business model" of the huge and well-funded patent troll, Intellectual Ventures. "Now, I don't really care if one company leeches off the others. But if they want to tax software, they have to attack free software otherwise people will switch to avoid their patent licensing costs. And if you don't believe some useful pieces of free software could be effectively banned due to patent violations, you don't think on the same scale as these guys."
