KDE PIM Goes Mobile (KDE.News)

KDE.News reports on the KDE PIM (Personal Information Manager) project's demonstration of mobile versions of its applications at LinuxTag. "The current work on KDE PIM Mobile applications will be largely portable to MeeGo based devices in the future. The current choice of targetting Maemo, however, means that the applications can be used on devices which are available in shops today. The top UI layer of the applications will likely need to be customised on a per-device basis because of differences in screen size, orientation, DPI and other factors, but the portability built into the platform itself means that future ports of the applications to new devices will not take as long as the initial development time."

If it motivates them to make it lighter and less crashy, why not?

The mobile variant uses Akonadi, which is the base of the upcoming KMail 2 (and other PIM components). By sharing and optimizing storage, caching and access, different UIs can be put on top of it. Akonadi itself is lightweight enough to run on mobile devices and desktops. The access mechanisms (Akonadi Resources) take care of synchronizing data with the backing store, for example an IMAP server, or other online groupware resources.

Creating a mobile client on top of Akonadi has positive effects on the future desktop PIM applications as well, as more device coverage and wider use-cases usually lead to higher quality code. As it gets wider testing and resources put into stabilization benefits both flavours.

This mobile prototype basically proves that an Akonadi-based client is viable also on mobile devices, and it gives a peak to what the KDE team can bring into the mobile space.

As Kolab Enterprise Client, even die KDE Kontact version from KDE 3.5 is stable and usable. I know because my company does direct professional support for several organisations. Intevation and KDAB founded Kolab Systems AG this spring, which will offer even more support options. The new coming KDE PIM based on Akonadi will be a significant improvement of course. The alphas are already running on the three major desktop platforms and mobile touch screen devices.

If you want to use Kontact in a production environment, go for the "e35" variant. Do not use Kontact from KDE PIM coming with KDE SC before 4.5.1. Pay special attention if you use packages from (k)ubuntu, they have a track record of being unlucky picking revisions.
