Softbank Uway Selects Linux and the IBM eServer z990 Mainframe for Online
University Admissions Processing

     -- Korea's e-document leader replaces 45 HP and Sun servers --

July 8, 2003 -- Korea's Softbank Uway, a leader in online university
applications, announced that it selected Linux running on the IBM eServer
z990 mainframe for its online university admissions service, replacing
45 database and Web servers from HP and Sun.

When completed, the new Softbank Uway system will improve performance and
availability for the company's university admission service. Softbank Uway
provides a variety of university applications, graduate school
applications, IT certification and other employment applications online.

By integrating dozens of physically dispersed database and Web servers to
one z990 mainframe, the company expects to dramatically simplify its
systems management and reduce software costs. Softbank Uway expects the
system to be fully operational in August when universities receive
applications for admission.

Softbank Uway plans to move to Linux running in partition on the z990 with
IBM's z/VM virtualization technology, which allows the creation of dozens
of virtual servers on a single mainframe. Softbank Uway also selected the
IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Model 800 (code-name Shark) and
IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 for data storage consolidation
and back-up.

"Online application submission is recording exponential growth," said
Young-san Lyu, CEO of Softbank Uway. "With the latest IBM eServer z990, we
can eliminate the potential risk of complications arising with multiple
servers when lines are congested at closing time."

"We believe that Softbank Uway's decision demonstrates that small
businesses and Web-based companies are increasingly recognizing the
advantages of Linux on the IBM mainframe," said Seung-ha Yang, Executive
Director of IBM Korea zSeries operations. "Softbank Uway is IBM's first
customer reference in the Asia Pacific region for the z990, which was
launched earlier this year."

When installation of the IBM zSeries z990 mainframe is completed, Softbank
Uway will gain greater flexibility and agility in its workload management.
If the resources of one of its logically partitioned database servers
becomes overloaded, the system will automatically utilize the resting
resources of another virtual server to accommodate the workload.
