It seems that it will always be limited to a "lowest common denominator" status, which makes it less useful for jumping between projects as part of a usual workflow." Er, no, it doesn't conflict with gegl. After all, it's an joint effort by Gegl's Oyvind Kolas, the Krita hackers and now the Mypaint developers. And apart from a baseline spec, there will be extensions defined, for instance for adding filters (referencing the svg filter spec, of course) and other operations to the stack.
