KDE Software Compilation 4.5 Beta1 Released
KDE has announced
the first beta of KDE SC 4.5.0. Some of the improvements in KDE SC 4.5
include a reworked notification area and KWin-Tiling. "KDE is now firmly in beta mode, meaning that the primary focus is on fixing bugs and preparing the stable release of the software compilation this summer."

Nice notification area... does it work if my home directory is mounted over NFS yet?

Even in the 3.X days it was problematic but to be honest the last time I tried it was when 4.2 came out and it didn't work at all - kconf_update would go into some kind of infinite loop and keep churning the hard drive on the server indefinitely.
It actually does work now better than it ever has before so either some change to the kernel, or nfs-utils or KDE has fixed the problem.
