Non-Commercial announcements
Google has
asked
the Open Source Initiative to delay its consideration of the WebM
license (
requested
by Bruce Perens) for a couple of weeks; the company has also requested some
changes in how the OSI does business. "
This might sound strident,
but I think that OSI needs to be more open about its workings to retain
credibility in the space." The resulting discussion,
unsurprisingly, seems mostly to be focused on the relative blackness of
various pots and kettles; those who are interested can read

full thread.

Commercial announcements
The One Laptop Per Child Foundation has
announced
a partnership with Marvell to develop the next-generation "XO 3.0"
system - a tablet, naturally. "
The new family of XO tablets will
incorporate elements and new capabilities based on feedback from the nearly
2 million children and families around the world who use the current XO
laptop. The XO tablet, for example, will require approximately one watt of
power to operate (compared to about 5 watts necessary for the current XO
laptop). The XO tablet will also feature a multi-lingual soft keyboard
with touch feedback, enabling it to serve millions more children who speak
virtually any language anywhere in the world."

NetworkWorld
takes a look at
the Appleseed Project. "
After I wrote about the Diaspora project a
few weeks ago, I was contacted by Michael Chisari of the Appleseed Project,
which is basically the same thing and predates Diaspora by several
years. Reason virtually no one had heard of it was because Chisari had
spent months developing the entire project himself and had to put it on
hold because he, well, reached the point where he couldn't finish it alone
with no one really interested in it." (Thanks to Martin Jeppesen)

ITWire
looks
at the top 500 supercomputer list. "
Of the 187 new entrants, all but one are running some variant of Linux and in fact 470 of the Top 500 run Linux, 25 some other Unix (mostly AIX) and the remaining 5 run Windows HPC 2008."
