Hacker group releases software-only Xbox mod details (Register)
The Register reports that
Free-X has now released details of their software-only Xbox security
exploits. "Last night, in a statement from the Free-X hackers, the
team said that its attempts to contact Microsoft had been rebuffed, and a
meeting arranged with a Microsoft representative had been cancelled at the
last minute. The group is now believed to have released details of its
exploit (being called the "Fourth of July hack" in some quarters) onto
certain Internet mailing lists."

Free-X people's bug posted to bugtraq? Posted Jul 10, 2003 11:42 UTC (Thu) by dps (subscriber, #5725) [Link] There was definitely a post on bugtraq that might the hack, but it was not quite pure software (unless you exploitd 007 or another vulernable game)---you needed to get a couple of files onto the Xbox hard disc before the xboxdash bug can be exploited. If this was then fixing the bug should be enimently possible, given the source code, but how fast it happens and what sort of fraction of the xboxen get fixed is another question.
