To be pedantic, it seems that what the patch calls 'standard deviation' actually is the *variance* (one wouldn't really want to calculate the standard deviation here...)

If you've got the variance, the standard deviation is only a sqrt away. If you're comparing them against a constant, there is no theoretical difference.
