Uh, the SoundBlaster Pro, SB16, and SBLive could *all* do hardware mixing. Many of these long predate the beginning of the 2000s and were targetted at the general user. (But your point stands: these days, general-user cards don't do this for you.)

and this card was totally broken in the early days of pulseaudio (I havn't tried to use it since, but I never did have pulseaudio working on that card.)
