"Fat" PS3 will continue to play BluRay discs and run any games that you have and will continue to boot the "Other OS" forever, as long as you never let it see the Internet. Even if you prevent Sony from upgrading the firmware you did lose a lot of functionality one way or the other.

BluRay you already own and that are already released will continue to play fine, but future disks might require a firmware update if they revoke the current PS3 key and change it in an update.

All games will lose their online play (a big source of re-playability for many of them), and will not receive anymore new content (paid or otherwise). New games will likely also require firmware updates, making them unplayable on the system.

And all this, just a short period of time AFTER Sony publicly stated that they weren't going to remove the "Other OS" support from the original PS3s!

Both "Other OS" and Internet play were announced features of PS/3. I decided to buy a PS/3 instead of Xbox 360 just because of the capability of running Linux and Internet play. I paid more than an Xbox due to that. By removing either one of the functionalities, Sony is violating my rights and my trust at the Company (btw, if I were interested on running illegal games, Xbox would be a much better alternative - and it is capable of running almost the same games as PS/3).

I've filled a complain myself some days ago at their service support (http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/p...)
requesting them to terminate my Internet account. I'll probably fill a complain at Customer Protection services on my Country, requesting Sony to refund me all the money I spent with PS/3, since this is not a fair trading practice.

It's not a matter of 'which I choose to lose, OtherOS or online gaming'. Instead, it's a matter of Sony deciding that 'you shall not be able to have both OtherOS and online gaming', despite the fact that they advertised to those customers that PS3 can do both.

Simply put, Sony does not have the right, and should not be allowed, to force fat-PS3-users to make that choice.
