Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ("Lucid Lynx") released

Its not my number one, but they bring Linux to a group of people who might not use it otherwise!

Great job and congrats to the team!

But what difference does it make if these people don't really care what they use as long as it just gets them to their facebooks?

Out of 100 Ubuntu users one of them will get involved. Out of 20 of those one will start to make useful contributions...

so that's one useful contribution per 2,000 users? ouch.

Well, I guess it's better than nothing. As Greg KH pointed out in http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid=3385088017824733336 , they are at the end of the ecosystem - there is not much to do, given bugs are let being timed out or are already fixed long in upstream and updates don't get included. I guess it's because all the enthusiastic developers are working... upstream or on other distros!

Well, Buzzy said "will start to make useful contributions", not just one contribution :)

It's a wild guess, of course, but if it were true it would be huge. You'd need to gain just two million users to get 1000 new contributors -- about as many as are working on Debian now.

I don't think the rate is that high.

Funny how people ask for Linux world domination and then complain that those they don't like use Linux.

It means a huge user community at http://ubuntuforums.org, providing support. Most people will run into problems or have questions, and the conversations there are of great help to other people.

Ubuntu Forums is so big that there are even occasional Windows users asking about things like which hardware to use for a Windows gaming PC, or how to recover Windows using an Ubuntu Live CD - often off topic but it shows the pulling power of a large community, and it introduces some Windows power users to the idea of an alternative OS.

Yes, but it also has nouveau by default.

It works, and even ran Second Life. Worked at maybe 10 seconds per frame, but it seemed to be working, which looks like a nice start.

If they get it to a tolerable performance level it'll be awesome.

The new theme really is beautiful (except for the window button location, but one can change that easily). Congratulations to the design team.

Social Notworking

Posted Apr 30, 2010 10:44 UTC (Fri) by alspnost (guest, #2763) [Link]

Has anyone really used the 'Me Menu' and Gwibber functionality in anger? I still can't get it to work smoothly, and it feels very half-baked at the moment, which is a shame. I've also discovered that the famous WPA wifi bug with Ralink chipsets (on many common netbooks) is *still* there after 3 releases, which is very disappointing. It's certainly faster and looks pretty, but in my experience, 9.04 remains the most solid and reliable Ubuntu release so far. Hopefully 10.04 LTS will mature nicely as further bug fixes are released.

It's puzzling that this bug is still there in the third release since its original report. Ok, it's evil ugly flash and we all don't like it, but anyway, it's a bug. My system is affected too and workaround 3 described there fixes it for me.

Looks like Ubuntu is targeting Mac users now. I have no comments on that, but I don't feel excited by Ubuntu anymore.
I am an happy LTS8.04 user (on several machines, including 3 laptops) but I think I'll switch to Debian. Well, I plan to test 10.04, but I don't think I'll use it in production.

I am on another plane. This is the first LTS version that I feel that I can stay at.

It supports the hardware I have now and will use for many years ahead.
