The message is a borderline troll, and I understand why Larry didn't intend to post it originally.

However, one question remains - if free software makes people pay less for software, what happens to software research? Who is going to finance it?

Indeed, Linux has been catching up all the time. Journaling filesystems, devfs, access control lists, multiple file streams - all that came from non-free software.

We can expect that the IT researchers will use free software for their research, so more new concepts will be implemented in free software first. However, we should be concerned that the amount of the IT research would shrink if the software industry generates less revenue.
