I've been wondering (but not enough yet to read back Shuttleworth's call to release synchronization), what if Gnome gets delayed (for whatever reason, even Ubuntu itself has been delayed at one point)?

I don't think that will happen; Gnome is pretty serious about its 6-month release schedule. If something isn't ready they prefer to back that change out rather than delay a release.
if I remember correctly, Ubuntu's one delay was for a LTS, where they knew they were going to support it for 3 years.
But I *guess* if gnome was delayed, then either Ubuntu would ship with a beta of Gnome, or they too would delay the release, depending on how nasty the problem was.

Yes, Ubuntu 6.06 was delayed by 2 months (was going to be 6.04). However, 8.04 was not delayed, and many think that the volume of serious issues meant it should have been.
