HTC responds to Apple

HTC has finally sent out a press release responding to Apple's patent lawsuit. "HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible."

i don't want this to end too quickly

the more apple is in the press as a perceived patent-troll, the faster the apple fatigue will set in, and soon they'll be hated and hipsters will feel conflicted

please htc, don't let apple out of the mud too quickly

Man. I wish I could agree with you. But actually now you have a bunch of people that are wholey ignorant of how software patents work and what they are... this is the first time they have ever heard of the concept.

You should never underestimate the power of Steve Job's reality distortion field. What is more likely to happen is that you will start having a bunch of Apple fans running around praising Apple's innovation and their deserved software patents.

After all:

Apple is the one that started the PC revolution right? Microsoft stole all their ideas! Now Apple is the inventor of smart phones and they make the best smart phones that were ever made. It's Apple that is the innovator and creator of this new market.

Unlike some other companies they absolutely deserved to get those patents. Google and HTC have no right to just copy the iPhone hardware and UI and then resell it! (I'm using BING now!)

If your going to hate anybody hate 'Big Pharm' for stiffling patent reform! Al Gore! Steve Jobs! Microsoft is evil! Linux is <1% of the market, it sucks! Viva la french toast!

By that logic, Apple stole its ideas from Nokia.

Wasn't there a lawsuit where Nokia alleged exactly that? ;-)

There's no logic here, it's all about Apple fanboys :)

Apple is the one that started the PC revolution right?

Apple was a successful PC vendor for some years before IBM. It's a matter of opinion whether any one company could be credited with 'start[ing] the PC revolution'.

Microsoft stole all their ideas!

They copied some, and good for them. 'Great artists steal', as, er, Steve Jobs said. Thankfully ideas are not copyrightable or patentable (at least in theory).

Sounds like you want to have a cloud of patent uncertainty hanging over embedded Linux for as long as possible. Do you work for Microsoft by any chance? ;-P

Easy... HTC just need to go full open (GSM/3G/LTE firmare will be tough)
... then apple will finish as cider.
Really, it does confirm the sayings of J.S. (ex Sun's CEO).

If we look through the comments from the previous article on this, many
feared that HTC would settle immediately.

The fact they have decided to fight is interesting, and it makes me wonder
what part Google will be playing in all this. Of course, some of the patents
are related to the specific hardware, but from the previous article is was
clear that there were some very broad software claims that were directed at
the Android framework.

If they are not yet involved they should, and quickly. This HTC case has created a lot of good will towards Android and Google, where many people where bashing them previously for lack of openness.
