North Korea develops Red Star OS based on Linux
======================================
It's hard to substantiate most claims made about North Korea's IT
industry, but details of the new operating system were made public by
a Russian blogger (http://ashen-rus.livejournal.com/4300.html), who
was able to buy a copy of the program off the street.
Russian student Mikhail, who studies in the Kim Il-sung University and
writes a blog from the Russian embassy in Pyongyang, has recently
purchased the Red Star OS (Operating System ) and tested it. He spent
five U.S. dollars in five-minute walk from the hostel where purchased
two CD-ROM.
Compared with the pure Linux, Red Star OS can not be considered the
most portable operating system, it is the minimum hardware
requirements for the Pentium III 800MHz processor, 256M memory, 3G
solid state hard drives.
System integration is very limited applications, such as "My Country"
browser (replace the shell Firefox), a simple Word word-processing
software, PDF document reader, video player software, virtual disk
management software.
Red Star OS features a unique keyboard, standard, respectively, can be
used to input in English, Korean, Chinese and Russian; entertainment
applications with four puzzle games, namely, mine clearance, Chinese
chess, stone machine, flower drawing card;
CD-ROM with Wine software other content are very similar to the "We"
office component, "Pigeon" e-mail service, fax communications
services, "Pyongyang Fortress" firewalls and calculator / calendar,
etc. It seems that They are using MS office software with Wine tool on
KDE based window manager.
Red Star OS Integrated Antivirus 2.0 package (Korean, did not know) be
regarded as the only genuine, authentic, and there is no open-source
rewrite of a paragraph, all of the code are on their own writing, have
a certain ability to killing malicious programs. In addition, Mikhail
used to run Warcraft 3 and other large-scale application software.
