SuSE Linux Enterprise Server Selected by Cray Inc. for the U.S. Department
of Energy's New "Red Storm" Supercomputer
Computer Simulations Will Monitor US Nuclear Stockpile
Oakland, California, June 23, 2003 -- SuSE Linux today announced that it
has been chosen by Cray Inc. (NASDAQ: CRAY) to drive key aspects of the
U.S. Department of Energy's new massively parallel processing (MPP)
supercomputer called Red Storm at Sandia National Laboratories, California,
which, when completed, will be the fastest supercomputer in the US.
Red Storm is expected to become operational in late 2004 timeframe and will
use Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) AMD Opteron processors
featuring HyperTransport technology in conjunction with Red Storm's
high-bandwidth, low-latency internal switching architecture. The Sandia
National Laboratories Red Storm supercomputer will be used for computer
simulations of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and other applications. The new
Red Storm supercomputer demonstrates a strong commitment by the Department
of Energy to providing the innovative technology needed to support the
nation's nuclear stockpile stewardship program.
SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for AMD64 technology combines the stability
and security of Linux with the performance enhancements available only
through the 64-bit architecture.
SuSE's agreement with Cray Inc. will also include developer support from
SuSE. "We look forward to working with Cray, a leader in the
high-performance computing arena, on this crucial initiative," said Holger
Dyroff, US General Manager, SuSE Linux. "The selection of SuSE for the
Department of Energy's new MPP supercomputer demonstrates the stability,
scalability and performance of SuSE Linux Enterprise Server on AMD
Opteron."
SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for AMD64 comes with an optimized kernel that
enables high availability solutions and the high-performance interaction
with storage systems in the SAN by means of asynchronous I/O and
multipathing memory access.
"We selected SuSE Linux Enterprise Server for AMD64 because it combines
innovative Linux technology with a powerful architecture for
high-performance computing," said Wayne Kugel, Cray's executive of
operations for the Red Storm initiative. "SuSE Linux Enterprise Server is a
strong operating system for high performance computing and we are excited
about our collaboration on this project."
