Misa Digital Guitar makes your Rock Band Peripherals feel inadequate (PCWorld)

PCWorld takes a look at the Linux-based Misa Digital Guitar. "The first thing that stands out about the Misa guitar is that the traditional pickup setup that you’d expect to find in the center of the guitar is replaced by an 8.4-inch 800-by-600-pixel resolution LCD touchpad. This is somewhat similar to a guitar that MUSE lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew Bellamy uses, except that on the Misa you strike the pad to hit the notes instead of strings. The touchpad is set up on an x/y coordinate pair where you will assign your desired effects."

The comparison is somewhat flawed: While the Misa guitar is fully electronic and the touchscreen is directly used to generate sound, the Korg Kaoss Pad in Matthew Bellamys guitar is just used to manipulate the analog sound coming from the traditional pick-ups.

Gutiar-ZyX- recycle that old NDS for a touchscreen midi/whammypad

If you like the idea of a touchscreen midipad, but don't want to forgo the real guitar part, try Guitar-ZyX. An NDS homebrew app combined with a fedora derived live linux appliance featuring rakarrack.

Personally, although I'm not a musician, I love the fact that one of the skyscraper ads appearing with this story is for the Gibson Dusk Tiger.

It's a nice little gimmick, but it is somewhat pointless. A guitar player already has a lot of opportunities for tone-shaping by playing techniques such as bending (and many more), plus a bewildering array of effect pedals.

A touchpad for effect control makes more sense in the keyboard world, where opportunities for shaping the tone with your fingers is much less, being reduced to attack, pitch wheel and tone wheel.

A good musician has already control over many more parameters than the Misa Digital Guitar can hope to provide.
