Rule out Linux on the desktop until 2005, says Giga (vnunet)
[Posted June 17, 2003 by ris]
Vnunet covers a Giga
Information Group pronouncement saying IT decision-makers should rule out
Linux on the desktop until at least 2005. "'It's a high risk
strategy to make any decisions based on being upset with Microsoft or
wanting to give Linux a chance. This is no time for platform religion,'
[analyst Rob Enderle] said."

Yes, it's old, and SuSE already posted a reply on the same site.

Seems to me that Giga are saying we have to wait 18 months -- and then it will be OK for IT managers to put linux on the desktop! I mean .. woohoo!

HOW STUPID!!You know, I love the history that surrounds the computing industry. Lets start with Dos 1.0. Skip the other versions and go to the more robust 2.1. Lets build from CPM (established op/sys then) toward the then New comer MS dos. WAIT. THIS (MS/PC DOS) was a dos that wasn't even in the millions strong (sales).( as is LINUX now) ( IBM did sell 600 thousand boxes in what 18 mo). Yet how many companies ran their WHOLE business on those early versions (buggy/limited ram usage and all) of dos. (The common knowledge of the day ..DON't use MS 1st version of ANYTHING, still prevails). We used the unknown upstart from Lotus called 123, And Dbase from Ashton-Tate, who was a carryover from CPM. WHat about IBM's choice of a processor (8086) from NOT ZILOG the Giant CPU(Z80(8bit) later (16bit) Z8000) company of the day, but from newkid ....iNtel. Remember the SUperbrain COmputers, and the Heathkit computers, that ran the Z80 CPU like almost ALL Business PCs of the day except Apple? Relevance for today. Oh! yes. ... Honest folks around the world run LINUX which is so far removed in A)QUality, B) Technical Elegance, and support from pre-windows MS, that even MODERN MS can't touch it, and C) Volume. Whole countries/goverments and even Lawrence Livermore operates totally or in part on LINUX. This person is quite likely a nice enough fellow by anyones standards, but obviously a "Newbie" to the computing community, which is built on INNOVATION. And a ROBUST sense of competition. Question... Where was he during the transition from CPM (established by 1980) to the afore-mentioed MS/PC Dos. Why did he not voice the same concerns then? Does he have another agenda? One tied into MS? This is not a fact, but one question begging to be asked, yes? Oh by the way in closing, Mr Gates was to have told IBM he had an op/sys already for them. He did mis-state the facts. SOmething his company seems to have perfected. He didn't have the finished product. Seattle COmputer had this little op/sys that he bought out from them. For a pittance. THIS is what later became MS/PC Dos. See, MORE slight of hand from MR Gates. DIgital Research the OWNER of CPM would have had a MUCH more robust op/Sys. Ever hear of CPM/86? COncurrent DOS 386 w/networking? Cost 20 users 599 in 1988. FAR better than MS?? w/LanManager?? SO please stop the talk of Linux NOT being ready. It is. And MS anything pales in comparison. LET Gates and Co. be upset. So what?

This "analyst" seems to be straight from a Dilbert comic. As duhcision maker, he clearly proposes to wait and not duhcide anything, because only people who do nothing make no mistakes. The question to the stockholder is why they pay a salery to someone who does nothing.
